USTelecom Urges Congress to Adopt National Broadband Policy
Background: With two bills that would be a critical first step toward developing a national broadband policy sitting before Congress, a diverse group of 30 organizations and companies has sent a joint letter to congressional and committee leaders urging action. “We believe Congress should adopt legislation this year that provides federal government support for state initiatives using public-private partnerships to identify gaps in broadband coverage and to develop both the supply of and demand for broadband in those areas,” the group wrote.
The following statement is from USTelecom President and CEO Walter B. McCormick Jr.:
“USTelecom is pleased to join this broad-based alliance of organizations that are striving to bring broadband to underserved and unserved parts of the country. As the bills pending before Congress recognize, accelerating investment and deployment in those areas depends on accurate broadband mapping and effective targeting of resources. I encourage Congress to seriously consider the coalition’s letter and adopt broadband legislation that will bring the benefits of broadband—from health and education to entertainment and the environment—to all Americans, regardless of where they live.”
