Today, the FCC issued its Congressionally mandated report on the future of the Universal Service Fund.
The following statement can be attributed to USTelecom President and CEO Jonathan Spalter:
“The Universal Service Fund was created for a different era and Congress is right to explore a more equitable and fair distribution of this obligation in a modern, connected world. Today, the vast majority of Internet traffic comes from a handful of dominant edge companies that do not contribute to the fund. We applaud the Commission’s clear recommendation that Congress ensure the FCC has the authority to expand the contributions base to include dominant edge providers. At the same time, we encourage the Commission to move forward within its existing permissive authority to secure the future for universal service.”
