Washington, D.C. (June 13, 2025)—Today, an alliance of leading internet providers, convened by USTelecom, launched the Common Sense Copyright Coalition to support balanced and effective copyright policy and enforcement that protects creators without compromising the connectivity and innovation that powers the American economy.
The connectivity community has consistently stepped up to address digital threats from abroad—and online piracy is no exception. As policymakers seek stronger tools to combat foreign-based piracy, the Coalition brings a reasoned voice to the table supporting policies that work for consumers, creators, and the essential infrastructure of the modern economy.
“Connectivity fuels the 21st century creator-driven economy,” said Josh Bercu, Senior Vice President for Policy at USTelecom. “These Coalition members deliver the lawful content Americans rely on every day—from streaming their favorite shows to lifesaving telehealth visits. But new liability theories, seeking billions from internet providers for infringing activities they had nothing to do with, threaten the networks that power it all. It’s time for common sense. This Coalition is focused on protecting creators, preserving connectivity, and advancing balanced solutions that don’t punish network providers for content they don’t control.”
The Common Sense Copyright Coalition’s guiding principles include:
- Standing for Balance: Supporting creators while safeguarding the infrastructure that delivers lawful content to millions.
- Supporting Accountability that Works: Calling for collective accountability across the digital ecosystem, with enforcement and legislative efforts focused on true bad actors—not neutral service providers.
- Opposing Misplaced Liability: Calling out concerning proposals and legal theories that misplace liability, threatening broadband investment and essential services.
