Statement: FCC Universal Service Support Order

Background: At an open commission meeting today, the FCC adopted (4-0) an order to offer additional universal service support to all rural carriers in exchange for deploying broadband at increased speeds to more areas.

The following statement can be attributed to Jonathan Spalter, president and CEO, USTelecom:

“Today’s order is a significant development in our shared goal of closing the digital divide. By reforming the unpredictable and insufficient funding for rate-of-return carriers, the FCC has taken a positive and meaningful step to spur broadband adoption and deployment in the years ahead. Most importantly, the FCC today gets us that much closer to universal service for rural consumers and businesses at the higher speeds they deserve. USTelecom appreciates the Commission’s continued attention to the unique budget concerns raised by America’s rural providers.”
