Statement: Bipartisan ‘Modern Television Act of 2019’

Background: Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-Calif.) and House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) have introduced the bipartisan Modern Television Act of 2019, a bill to repeal outdated regulations of the 1992 Cable Act, including retransmission consent and to address broadcast TV blackouts.

The following statement can be attributed to Jonathan Spalter, president and CEO of USTelecom:

“Consumers watch video in a completely different way than they did a generation ago, but the system governing retransmission remains outdated and broken. Congresswoman Eshoo and Congressman Scalise understand the need for a complete overhaul and have created this thoughtful and comprehensive solution that would be an immediate win for consumers and video providers alike. Congress should pass this plan and get the government back in tune with the reality of the 21st century video marketplace.”
